Short Poetry for Those Who Fear Death

Picture
What is death? A topic many are scared to discuss. With this idea in mind, and reflecting upon the suicide of her own mother, the author wrote thirty-four poems, offering us a vision of what Death might imply for all of us. Using short fixed forms of poetry such as haiku, lantern, or mirrored refrain, her poetry sheds a positive light on one of the darkest topics of all times.

I SAW VALES

  My beloved, I saw vales

Brighter than the sun and moon.

The azure was in God’s sails

And my heart ready, attune.

This realm had been made for me.

Cupid smiled in every place,

And I only wished to Be!

My beloved, I saw vales.

HOME

Home is where you feel joyful.

Bring it with you, in your heart,

And when time has come, doubtful,

You can still believe and thwart

What you used to fear and blame.

Home is where your soul feels right.

Believe me, I hold its flame.

For each second is insight.

Living and dying is fair.

You cannot fight God’s decree.

I feel jubilant, I swear,

‘Cause to me, everything’s home.

Review by Linda Copeland

"This collection of beautiful poetic offerings from Cendrine Marrouat is a must have for all of us! The hearts of readers will be opened to a different view of death and the dying. Whether you are suffering from a terminal illness or from the loss of a loved one, fear sometimes is strangling to the acceptance process. As soon as I read Stillborn, I called my friend who just gave birth to a
stillborn daughter to recommend this book. These poems are rich and satisfying. Cendrine's ability to stir both the visual and auditory senses is most evident in Ripples.I read this poem aloud to hear the melodious resonance. Marrouat's magical use of imagery and her consistently
perfect artistic form serve the reader well in each offering. Her touching poem called To My Mother undid me on first read. It was emotional, but as I re-read the poem, I felt the freedom Cendrine mentioned firsthand. I felt a connection emotionally to every poem in this anthology and will be forever changed by the experience. Everyone should read this book, not once, but often."

Review by Jennifer Hudock
"It is inevitable.  Everyone and everything dies.  Many people do not like to think about that, and they certainly have no wish to embrace it. In Cendrine Marrouat's collection of poetry titled Short Poetry for Those Who Fear Death, Marrouat takes into hand that thing we fear and makes it not only natural and compelling, but beautiful.  From the poetic viewpoint that without death, there would be no life, Marrouat explores death from every angle imaginable. The poetry in this collection is both peaceful and beautiful.  Marrouat tests the water of a variety of subjects and styles, leaving her readers with a sense of calm resolve by the final page of the book.  This is an amazing and comforting tribute to death and life, which Marrouat describes as embracing sisters, asking, "How could either of them ever harm us?""
